How to Identify Quality Linen
Flax origin
Premium linen starts with European flax — especially from France, Belgium, and the Baltics. Look for brands that name their flax source rather than vague "imported linen" claims.
Weight (GSM)
Sheet weight is measured in grams per square metre (GSM). Quality bedding linen typically falls between 160–190 GSM for sheets; duvet covers may be slightly heavier. Very thin linen (<140 GSM) may feel flimsy; very heavy linen may feel stiff until broken in.
Certifications
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tested for harmful substances
- European Flax / Masters of Linen — traceable European flax
- GOTS — organic fibre and processing standards
Finish and weave
Stonewashed and garment-washed linen feels softer from day one. Plain weave is standard; be wary of "linen" blends that are mostly cotton or polyester. Check the label for 100% linen.
Thread count
Unlike cotton, linen thread count is a poor quality signal — linen yarns are thicker. Focus on GSM, fibre origin, and brand reputation instead.
